For the Account Type, select POP or IMAP.

IMAP is the newer, more flexible protocol and is recommended. You can read about IMAP and POP in the other FAQs.

Enter your POP or IMAP mail host name. This will be mail.spanmail.net unless you have your own domain.

(Some organizations that have SpeedSpan Spanmail accounts for their domain have host names that start with "mailhost" but most start with "mail" so check the information you got when your account was established.)

The same name will go in the SMTP server name.

Fuse (Cinti Bell), AOL and some other ISP's will not let you use your own SMTP server for sending mail. So you'll have to use smtp.fuse.net for the SMTP server if Fuse is your ISP, or find out what your ISP's smtp server is called. On AOL, we suggest you use webmail, unless you want to use AOL's email service. To use webmail, go to www.speedspan.com and login at the bottom left.

Enter your account name.
Your account name is your full email name for spanmail. (Most mail servers that you have used before expected just the part before the @ sign.)

Enter your password. Click "Remember Password."

Do not click the box for Secure Password Authentication.

Hey! This isn't all filled in! Outlook Express startup screen
Put your email address into the Reply Address line (so persons receiving your email can click Reply to reply and it will work). In addition, you may want to add an organization, if you work in or belong to one.

Finally, if you will be setting up more than one account, you may want to make the mail account name (top line) more descriptive.

(Note: only you see the mail account name on the top line, while the information on the next four lines is transmitted with your emails.

You will almost always want to click the checkbox to
  "Include this account when ..."

Click OK.

Now you're done. On the main Outlook Express screen, click the "Send/Recv" Mail icon. Or, go to the Tools menu and select "Send and Receive" and "Send and Receive All (Ctrl-M)."
